LESSON 31
From sound to electricity : hair cells
- Year 1
- Fall semester
- Physiology I
- Hearing physiology
- Duration: 12:27
How does the vibration of the basilar membrane become an electrical signal in hair cells? In this lesson we go step by step through stereocilia bending, tip links, potassium entry and depolarization, the endocochlear potential of about +80 mV made by the stria vascularis, and the inner hair cell synapse. As clinical links, we discuss strial loss, otoferlin and auditory neuropathy, ototoxicity and the cochlear microphonic.
