LESSON 32
The cochlear amplifier and prestin
- Year 1
- Fall semester
- Physiology I
- Hearing physiology
- Duration: 10:20
Why is a living cochlea so much more sensitive and selective than a dead one? In this lesson we cover outer hair cell electromotility, the motor protein prestin, the cochlear amplifier's gain of about 40 to 50 dB, compression, and its role in frequency selectivity. We also introduce how outer hair cell loss shows on the audiogram and how it relates to otoacoustic emissions.
